How School Calendars Affect a Family Move
Families with school-age children often try to move during summer or a scheduled school break. That can make the academic transition easier, but it also places the move during one of the busiest periods of the year.
School calendars should be reviewed before selecting a moving date because North Georgia districts do not necessarily begin classes, end classes or schedule breaks on the same dates.
Gwinnett County Public Schools
The approved 2026–2027 Gwinnett County Public Schools calendar lists August 5, 2026, as the first day of school. Families should consult the district’s official calendar for holidays, digital-learning days, early-release dates and future revisions.
If you are moving into Gwinnett County during the summer, avoid waiting until the final days before school begins to address:
- Enrollment.
- Residency verification.
- Immunization records.
- Transportation.
- After-school care.
- Course placement.
- Special education records.
Buford City Schools
Buford operates its own independent city school system. A Buford mailing address does not automatically mean a student is zoned for Buford City Schools.
Before buying or leasing a home, confirm whether the property is:
- Inside the City of Buford.
- Eligible for Buford City Schools.
- Assigned to Gwinnett County Public Schools.
- Assigned to Hall County Schools.
This is especially important because Buford spans portions of Gwinnett and Hall counties.
Hall County Schools and Gainesville City Schools
Families moving north toward Flowery Branch, Braselton or Gainesville may encounter Hall County Schools or Gainesville City Schools.
Do not assume that the nearest school is the assigned school. Attendance depends on district and attendance-zone boundaries.
Forsyth County Schools
Families moving toward Cumming should verify the exact school assignment because the Cumming postal area extends far beyond the city boundary.
Forsyth County’s growth has also resulted in new schools and periodic attendance-zone changes.
Is Summer Always the Best Time to Move?
Summer avoids a midsemester transfer, but it also has disadvantages:
- Higher moving demand.
- Hotter weather.
- More competition for weekend dates.
- School offices may operate on limited summer schedules.
